Breakfast & Beyond - Episode 5:
G7 Fringe - Does my Breakfast Make a Difference?
As the 2021 G7 summit took place in Cornwall, a short hop up the coast in Newquay I hosted a discussion between four fantastic panellists who work in the field of sustainability. Our conversation took the theme, Does my breakfast make a difference?
In other words, what role do our individual actions – such as what we eat for breakfast - have alongside those of large-scale organisations (be they governments, corporations or multinational agencies) in creating rapid, positive change for people, and for the planet?
The G7 (which stands for Group of 7) is a meeting of 7 heads of state – the UK, America, Germany, France, Japan, Italy and Canada. This year it was the UK’s turn to take on the Presidency and hosting of the G7, and the agenda included: Covid-19 recovery, trade, foreign policy and climate change.
So, as some of the most powerful people in the world, representing some of the richest countries (in combination the G7 equates to almost half of global wealth, despite representing only 10% of the global population) met here in Cornwall, it seemed timely to host a discussion on the role of individual and community-based action, alongside those of governments represented by the G7, in creating a more sustainable future.
I was lucky enough to be joined by four panellists with a broad range of experience working on sustainability within different sectors:
Catherine Chong - climate economist and sustainability advisor for Link ESG, co-founder of Farms to Feed Us and co-chair of Nature-Friendly Cornwall
Manda Brookman - has been working in Cornwall for the last 19 years on change, resilience and creative disruption. Manda is Director of the social enterprise Permanently Brilliant which focuses on how we can all inspire transformational change.
Henry Morgan - Sustainable Investment Manager at Foresight Group, a global investor in sustainable infrastructure.
Matt Hocking - founder of sustainable design agency Leap, and an ambassador for B Corporation UK
True to this podcast’s theme, breakfast was firmly on our agenda, and before going live with our conversation, we were lucky enough to share a delicious, seasonal-inspired and locally sourced breakfast cooked up by Eden McClure - details below.
